Happy Monday to all.
Jun Seba, known as nujabes, passed roughly four and a half years ago, but he lives on through those that he inspired.
Today’s song is named Luv(sic) Part6, by Nujabes feat. Shing02, also known as “Grand Finale,” the last song of the Luv(sic) series.
(For those who are not familiar, nujabes is a Japanese hip-hop artist, DJ and producer who was very influential during his short life. He collaborated with many artists when he was active. The title “Luv(sic)” denotes his collaboration with Shing02, a Japanese rapper.) The title is a play on the Latin adverb (sic) and the word ‘lovesick.’
Before nujabes’ death, Shing02 and he had exchanged ideas for Part4, 5 and 6, which would relate to discovery, parting and reuniting, respectively. Shing02 and Nujabes’ label, Hydeout Productions, wished to finish and release the songs planned before his death. (They are credited to nujabes as Shing02 confirmed that a beat was found on Nujabes’ cellphone entitled “Luv(sic) grand finale,” which influenced the production of these tracks.)
The lyrics largely speak for themselves. Shing02 ties it all back to Nujabes, combining his slick wordplay with a definite farewell to the man who started it all (“Gotta finish what we started, so I cute the tape/ as our records will stay on rotate.”) The most telling lyrics say, “after six come seven eight/ access code to the pearly gates.” There can be no part7 or 8, because Nujabes is gone.
